My fifth grader has started acting, and she needs monologues both for class and auditions. I ordered this book because most of what I've found online is not appropriate for her age group. These selections are definitely age-appropriate. There is a boys' section and a girls' section, but I've found that many of the monologues could be easily adapted for either gender. The book includes dramatic as well as comedic monologues. Some are funnier than others, but with a little bit of personalization, kids can let their inner star shine.Be aware that the book was published in 1999 - which means that much of the slang is outdated. Some selections actually sound like an adult's version of kids' slang - like a middle-aged parent trying to be "hip to the kids". If you can get past that, or if you are willing to make changes, then you'll find plenty to like about this book.Overall, I found it reasonably priced and age-appropriate - and my daughter and her friends love it.I bought this book to use in a drama class I teach for 4th-8th graders after reading so many favorable reviews. Fortunately, I bought a used copy! I personally liked another monologues book (Winning Monologs for Young Actors) much better. The ones in this book are all very short. I was surprised how many reviews said they used these in auditions - as most of the monologues are not even a page and take about a minute to perform. I let my kids pick their own monologues - and almost all of them picked one from another book. So after using the book, I felt I ought to go back and write a review. I agree the author writes the way kids speak (lots of slang)and that may appeal to some kids. But, I definitely didn't think it was as great as other reviewers thought, so wanted to post another side of the story. For me, I'm glad I didn't buy it new as it wasn't worth the money. My daughter is an young aspiring actress and I have purchased multiple books from the Hollywood 101 series by Chambers Stevens. When we first started to persue her dreams, I was extremely overwhelmed and finding good monologues/comercials for her was beyond difficult. I was new to the whole scene and had no clue about anything. Chambers' books proved to be extremely useful. They provided a variety of good material for my daughter to use and practice. They also provided me with great information on the whole "show business" scene. And the best part of it all is that Chambers knows what he is talking about, knows what those in the field are looking for, and has the experience to back it all up. I highly recommend this series for anyone working with young aspiring actors as it helped my daughter sign with a hollywood agency. This is a very helpful book on monologues. My son found a couple he really liked and wants to use in his audition. The only down fall I see is that there are not enough comedic monoloques for the kids. He needs one that is funny, but with his personality he is going to make the one work that we found. The typing is big and easy for kids to read and there are not any words that are too difficulty to read on thier own.Chambers writes the best books for kids in the business. His monologues are age appropriate and fun. He knows what you should do and what you shouldn't do and shares his wealth of knowledge with his readers. His years of experience and instinctive understanding of kids are just what you need.My daughter often works on these for fun. Her favorite is Gertie. You should also be sure to check out I ordered this book for my 11 year old daughter before the The Event in Orlando, FL. She had many great monologues to choose from and was able to settle on one that truly showed her personality. Great Book! Most of the monologues were good for the middle grade students in our recreation department theatre classes. We also shared the pointers for preparing to audition. We will use this and the second book again next year.Great monologues for kids! I highly recommend this author and their book, as well as the vendor!
